Nitrogen is widely used to replace compressed air in tyres.

Over time, when compressed air is used to fill a tyre, the oxygen and water vapour in the air permeates through the tyre. This has several effects on the tyre. It reduces the pressure in the tyre and thus increases rolling resistance leading to an increase in fuel usage. It also promotes oxidation of the steel belting within the tyre, limiting the number of re-treads or re-caps possible.
